چکیده

1 Introduction Thank you for the invitation to speak to you today. We are flattered to be included among so many distinguished presenters and to have the opportunity to be heard by such an eminent panel. We have expressed our concern to the NAS that a couple of panel members have close associations to people who strongly oppose our views. We reiterate the need for the Panel to undertake a thorough and unbiased examination of the evidence we present, and we have prepared our submission on the assumption that this will be done. We are not here to argue for or against the Medieval Warm Period, or to present an alternative interpretation of climate history, but to report on our efforts to evaluate the quality, robustness and statistical significance of multiproxy evidence behind the claim that 20 th century climate change is unprecedented in a millennial context. In this regard we will primarily focus on the following questions put to this panel by Representative Boehlert:

Proxy-based reconstructions of hemispheric and global surface temperature variations over the past two millennia.

Following the suggestions of a recent National Research Council report [NRC (National Research Council) (2006) Surface Temperature Reconstructions for the Last 2,000 Years (Natl Acad Press, Washington, DC).], we reconstruct surface temperature at hemispheric and global scale for much of the last 2,000 years using a greatly expanded set of proxy data for decadal-to-centennial climate changes, re...

Quantitative reconstruction of past climates using extension of modern climate-pollen relations based on the MAT method

Introduction Instrumental records span only a tiny fraction (<107) of the Earth’s climatic history. Therefore, indirect source of climate data must be used. Subfossil pollen and plant macrofossil data derived from sediment profiles can provide quantitative information on past climate. Recognizing the relationship between pollen assemblages and climatic variables and then interpreting foss...

Filling the Eastern European gap in millennium-long temperature reconstructions.

Tree ring-based temperature reconstructions form the scientific backbone of the current global change debate. Although some European records extend into medieval times, high-resolution, long-term, regional-scale paleoclimatic evidence is missing for the eastern part of the continent. Here we compile 545 samples of living trees and historical timbers from the greater Tatra region to reconstruct ...

Climate change would enlarge suitable planting areas of sugarcanes in China

China’s sugar production and consumption continues to increase. This process is alreadyongoing for over 15 years and over 90% of the sugar production comes from sugarcane(Saccharum officinarum). Most of the sugarcane is planted in the south (e.g. the Chineseprovinces of Yunnan, Guangxi, Guangdong and Hainan) and it represents there a majoreconomic crop in these landscapes. As found virtually wo...

Expected nucleation effects of carboxylic acid salts on poly(1-butene)

9,10-Dihydro-9,10-ethano-anthracene-11,12-dicarboxylic acid disodium salt (DHEAS) was synthesized and used as a nucleating agent for poly(1-butene) (iPB). The isothermal crystallization kinetics of iPB having different nucleating agents were investigated by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and polarized optical microscopy (POM). The results showed that the nucleating agents increased the...
